National Postcard Week 2014 May 4 to 10 Wichita Postcard Club Arkansas Valley Interurban Railroad

National Post Card Week 2014 is the first full week of the month, May 4 - 10th.  To celebrate the humble postcard, the Wichita Postcard Club has produced this very nice tribute to the Arkansas Valley Interurban Railway of the early 1900s designed by artist Rick Geary. Easter Egg Malfunction postcard

Hopefully you did not receive a lemon instead of an egg for Easter. This young "toff" in his top hat & tux seems bemused by it all.

Tired Out Black Children on Beach Artist H Sandford Tuck postcard series

All that sun and sand ... followed by all that crying when we thought we were lost... well, I'm plumb tuckered out.  Nap time!

Lost! Black Children on Beach Series H Sandford Tuck postcard series

Lost! Black Children on Beach Series H Sandford Tuck postcard series

Children lost on the sands. How come whenever we turn towards the sea - and turn our backs on the beach - we lose track of where we are and who we are meant to be with?

Lost!   Waaaaaaaaaa!

Anyone seen a lifeguard?

The Catch of the Season Black Children on Beach Series H Sandford Tuck postcard series

The Catch of the Season Black Children on Beach Series H Sandford Tuck postcard series

What is it??!!  One finds all sorts of strange and mysterious things at the seashore - that place where the landlubbers' knowledge of things is muddied by the mysteries of the deep. What could it be?

Buried Treasure Black Children on Beach Series H Sandford Tuck postcard series

Buried Treasure Black Children on Beach Series H Sandford Tuck postcard series

Black children making living sand castles on the beach. Art by H Dix Sandford.

One of a set of 6 postcards in Raphael Tuck & Sons, Happy Little Coons Series V, number 9299.  (I'm cringing at the racial epithet; yet it does provide a glimmer of social history insight to that age, the early 1900s). There series was issued in February 1907. More information at TuckDB

Early Days of Sport - Polo in 600 BC - Raphael Tuck & Sons postcard

Polo in 600 BC, Early Days of Sport series, Tuck & Sons postcard
see the full series and more at TuckDB.org

Originating in Persia (Iran) around 600 BC, polo spread through the region with the British learning the game from Manipur, India and taking up the sport at home in mid nineteenth century.

The quality of both the artwork and printing in this Early Sport series underscores the high status of Raphael Tuck & Sons in the postcard collecting world.

Passive Resistance Grandpa Come Play at the Seaside artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Passive Resistance Grandpa Come Play at the Seaside artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Come on, Gramps! Let's build a sandcastle, paddle in the sea, get an ice cream.... Oh, he says, feigning old age, I'm too old for such things but somehow he manages to allow himself to be swayed and is dragged off for a day of sunburn & sand between the toes.... and the best day he's had in years with ones so young.

Passive Resistance Perhaps Just A Drop artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Passive Resistance Perhaps Just A Drop artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Perhaps just a drop... a bracer to strengthen me during this bone cracking rail journey from hell. Yet again temptation presents itself, here in the guise of the jovial country squire, offering just a snort to the pious preacher. Passive resistance, hard to muster, gives way to a tipple or two to shorten the journey.

From artist L Thackeray's Passive Resistance series for Raphael Tuck & Sons, circa 1904. More details here.

Passive Resistance Priest Chances A Sly Glance at Young Woman Passerby artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Passive Resistance Priest Chances A Sly Glance at Young Woman Passerby artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

The spirit is strong but the flesh is weak. A priest chances a sly glance at the ankles of the young lady passing by.  Life throws all sorts of temptation in one's way and sometimes only a passive resistance marks the line between prim and improper.

Another in the series Passive Resistance by artist L Thackeray for the publisher, Tuck & Sons. The full set may be seen at TuckDB.

Passive Resistance Master and Maid artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Passive Resistance Master and Maid artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Master and maid in an embrace, third of a series entitled Passive Resistance by artist L Thackeray for Raphael Tuck & Sons, London-based publisher of postcards in the early 1900s.

Is she passive because she dare not resist too strongly for fear of losing her job or worse, or does she have hopes for moving above her station in life? Ah, the drama of the Upstairs, Downstairs classes.

Passive Resistance - The Game is Up! Caught Smoking! artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Passive Resistance - The Game is Up! Caught Smoking! artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Two schooboys in top hats & canes sneak a quick cigarette only to face imminent discovery by a schoolmaster rounding the corner.  Another card in L Thackeray's Passive Resistance series for Raphael Tuck & Sons.

The Tuck Aquarette series was first issued in March 1904, still appearing in Tuck's 1912 catalogue.  The set of 6 cards was sold in the UK, US and Canada at the height of the Golden Age of postcards.

Passive Resistance - Policeman Leads Dog artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

Passive Resistance - Policeman Leads Dog artist L Thackeray Tuck postcard series

One of a set of 6 postcards in Tuck & Sons' Passive Resistance series by artist L Thackeray.  There doesn't seem anything passive about this dog's resistance to being hauled off by the long arm of the law!  The young boy seems heartily amused by the procession and follows rather than perhaps taking flight in the opposite direction when the law patrols the neighborhood.
